BIG HEAD FOR HORSES This is a condition in which there is a partial replacement of bone with soft, poorly calcified fibrous tissue. This results in enlargement of the bone, particularly of the face and mandible. Early tiring, enlargement of the leg bones and lameness may also be present. This is usually due to calcium deficiency. Deficiency of calcium and / or upset of the ratio of calcium to phosphorous, together with faulty supply of Vitamin D in some cases. The condition occurs when there is less calcium than a ration of 1:2.9 of calcium to phosphorous. It does not occur where there is more calcium than this. With a very gross excess of phosphorous and a low intake of calcium (eg. 2 per day instead of a normal of about 25g per day), the disease will occur in five months. Where obvious symptoms of the disease do not occur, less acute deficiencies may cause milder symptoms such as lameness. APPLICATION
